The energy transition<\/a> is no longer just about sustainability, it\u2019s about affordability, energy independence, and resilience. Two years on from Europe\u2019s last gas crisis \u2013 then triggered by the Russian invasion of Ukraine, now by the Iran war, businesses across the globe are again faced with supply chain disruptions and growing energy prices. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

Now more than ever, reducing dependency on fossil fuels via AI-enhanced energy diversification and optimization is becoming a critical solution to energy security concerns. <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0big picture: where capital\u00a0and\u00a0policy are moving<\/strong><\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n

Prior to the Iran war, the world was already experiencing stellar growth in renewables and electrification with a record 814 gigawatts of wind and solar generation capacity added in 2025<\/a>, comprising 647 GW of solar and 167 GW of wind. And in the first half of last year, renewables overtook coal in the global electricity mix for the first time, passing 34% of global electricity<\/a> generation<\/a> (and including nuclear increases that share to over 43%). <\/p>\n\n\n\n

In April\u00a0of this year, France quietly doubled its bet on the energy transition. Prime Minister S\u00e9bastien Lecornu announced that public support for electrifying industry, transport, and buildings\u00a0will\u00a0double\u00a0to EUR 10 billion by 2030<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

\u00a0In the\u00a0same\u00a0month, tanker traffic through the Strait of Hormuz, which usually transports about 20% of the world\u2019s oil and liquified natural gas (LNG),\u00a0remained at\u00a0roughly 5% of the pre-war monthly average<\/a>,\u00a0reminding global executives\u00a0just\u00a0how exposed the world is to fossil fuel supply shocks.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The\u00a0consequences of the war are also\u00a0visible in wholesale markets.\u00a0Considering\u00a0the period from\u00a0January\u00a0to\u00a0April 2026, countries with higher\u00a0shares of\u00a0renewable\u00a0generation,\u00a0including Spain, Portugal, and the Nordics, had\u00a0significantly lower wholesale electricity prices<\/a>\u00a0than countries like Italy or Ireland,\u00a0which have\u00a0a higher proportion of\u00a0fossil fuel generation.\u00a0For an industrial customer\u00a0looking\u00a0at a\u00a010-20\u00a0year\u00a0energy\u00a0horizon, that translates directly into\u00a0significantly\u00a0lower price\u00a0risk,\u00a0and a more predictable cost base\u00a0in the face of\u00a0future\u00a0fossil fuel\u00a0supply\u00a0volatility.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Diversification is a\u00a0win for energy security\u00a0(and\u00a0the planet)\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

For most of the last decade, the energy transition was framed in environmental terms.\u00a0Now the debate has changed.\u00a0Diversifying away from fossil fuel\u00a0reliance\u00a0has become a strategic and commercial decision, because\u00a0overdependence on volatile fossil\u00a0fuel\u00a0energy\u00a0is now one of the largest unhedged risks on any industrial balance sheet.\u00a0 <\/p>\n\n\n\n

The 2022 gas crisis forced European governments and corporations\u00a0to absorb a fiscal and competitiveness shock measured in hundreds of billions of euros. The UK Climate Change Committee makes the comparison explicit:\u00a0the total cost of reaching net zero by 2050 is less than\u00a0the impact of a single fossil fuel price shock of the 2022 kind<\/a>.\u00a0Cleaner\u00a0can\u00a0also\u00a0be\u00a0cheaper, faster, and more secure.\u00a0<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n

As businesses face rising energy bills and\u00a0new\u00a0geopolitical headwinds\u00a0in the wake of the Iran war, Boards\u00a0are viewing\u00a0diversified portfolios\u00a0of renewables, storage, and electrification\u00a0not\u00a0as\u00a0standalone\u00a0sustainability initiatives, but as sensible\u00a0allocations of capital to\u00a0protect margins and enhance\u00a0long-term\u00a0business resilience.\u00a0<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Building operational resilience,\u00a0holistically\u00a0<\/strong><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n

In fact, as reported by World Economic Forum, badly maintained, defective, or outdated equipment and infrastructure is driving a staggering annual loss of global GDP of between $1 trillion and $3 trillion<\/a>. This same poorly maintained equipment is also responsible for approximately 25% to 30% of global greenhouse gas emissions. Improved maintenance of these assets could significantly close this \u201cmaintenance and emissions gap\u201d and go a long way to improving both the global climate and economic outlook. <\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n
